Fenghuang Ancient Town, located in western Hunan Province, is one of China’s most beautiful and well-preserved ancient towns. With a history stretching back over 1,300 years, the town is renowned for its unique architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is situated on the banks of the Tuo River, where traditional stilted houses (called diaojiaolou) are built along the riverbanks, creating a picturesque landscape. Fenghuang is also a cultural hub for the Miao and Tujia ethnic minorities, and it gained significant fame through the works of the acclaimed writer Shen Congwen, a native of the town. Its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient city walls, and intricate bridges over the river evoke a timeless, tranquil atmosphere, attracting artists and travelers from around the world.
